Being a fashion designer I was trained to keep an inspiration book. It just got beyond control. Books and boxes full of photocopies, photographs, little objects, fabric samples, magazines, notes, drawings you name it. I thought why not order it this way... as sort of a blog.

Vredenhof, Schiermonnikoog. Photograph from the archives of the graveyard's caretaker. He traced back relatives of the fallen soldiers, who found final piece on this island. Sharing his memories was a very special moment. Thank you.

Schrank8 | A home gallery

Schrank8 (founded 2010) is a 1930’s showcase cabinet originally from Germany. It’s now part of the living room of Hansje van Halem [graphic designer] in Amsterdam. Every two months an artist is invited to fill the cabinet.

Just saw a presentation of Dutch graphic designer Hansje van Halem and still under the influence. She explained where her inspirations come from, what she does with uncommissioned work and how she doodles with Japanese ink pens.

Dried tear
2013-11-09

Dried tear [by Lita Cabellut] explores the cross-over between the East and the West without giving explicit statement about it. The title refers to the infinite injustice that –mainly done to women- from childhood and onward, like misuse, pain because of imposed (beauty) ideals and forced ambitions and subservience. All this suffering is endured in silence, the tear has dried and is carried in silent resistance.

GAGA

Winning entry by Frances Edith Cooper for GAGA [The Global Architecture Graduate Awards], The Architectural Review's annual student awards. Cooper is a postgraduate student at the university of Auckland. In her thesis “Architecture of the synthetic, the spectacular and the belligerent” she proposes new, “anti-iconic” architectural solutions for the Waitemata Harbour in Auckland. I particularly liked her design process: “The design progressed through prolific bouts of making models, sketches and collages.” More in the October issue of The Architectural Review.

Love this album cover and title. Neither did I know about the genre, nor about the author, but it immediately made me curious to listen to it. Push any button by singer-songwriter Sam Philips [possible to listen to it via her site].

Searching for something new
2013-11-03

I tried to think and feel and see as if I wasn’t making clothes.

Rei Kawakubo’s Creative Manifesto was exclusively available to BoF [Business of Fashion], October 30. I was so wondering about the timing of this. Change is coming.
Underground
2013-11-03

Attending ADE [Amsterdam Dance Event] reminded me that, even though my own career curve continues to move in a positive direction, I’m still very much a part of the underground, and more than happy to remain so – the lure of the mainstream has never appealed to me, and although it’s nice to receive recognition for your efforts, I find the ever-growing adulation of the DJ, as illustrated in this day and age by dancefloors filled with camera phone holding admirers, rather than people actually dancing, to be a more unwelcome aspect of our profession, and something that is bound to attract a large proportion of those whose primary objective isn’t to push dance music forward, but to seek their own celebrity. It’s the nature of the beast these days – too much style and not enough substance.

Very strong verdict from Mr. Greg Wilson. I bumped into his blog after searching for the photographer of the ADE image. The 'Your ADE (Amsterdam Dance Event) DJ' campaign was shot by photographer Rahi Rezvani and the above photograph portrays Delivio Reavon, Mitchell Niemeyer, Aaron Gill and Eva Young. I found these images disturbingly beautiful and I definitely believe they cross over into fashion-territory. And celebrity is a bitch. But it is something of very now. Hope is we will be bored with it soon.
