"Two lines from his 1953 movie The Wild One might have served as the soundtrack to Marlon Brando's monumentally tumultuous life: Sweet young Kathie asks leather-jacket-wearing, motorcycle-riding, authority-baiting Johnny, played by Brando, "What are you rebelling against?" Johnny replies: "Whaddaya got?" "[ people.com]

' Bourgeois [Louis] explains that this holiday card of 1944 commemorated the landing of the Allies in Normandy during World War II, and she identifies her depiction of the map of the Normandy coast. "Usually the light comes from the east ...The miracle was, on that particular day, it came from the west." ' [from the the publication of the Museum of Modern Art, New York: The prints of Louise Bourgeois]

During the War

"Bourgeois and her family spent a great deal of time in the forties at a small country house in Easton, Connecticut. The cupboard depicted in this woodcut was a notable piece of furniture at that house and remains in her family today. For Bourgeois the cupboards brings back memories of shortages during the war and the need to store up food. " [from the the publication of the Museum of Modern Art, New York: The prints of Louise Bourgeois]
An early print of Louis Bourgeois entitled During the war: Shortage of Food in Easton (alternative title: Coeur de chêne [Heart of Oak]), 1942/1944.

Beneath the Roses
2014-10-03
"I feel very strongly that every artist has one central story to tell,
the struggle is to tell and re-tell that story over and over again in visual form
and try to challenge that story,
the act, the core of that story remains the same,
it’s like the defining story of who you are."
I've just finished watching the documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters [2012] and it made a profound impact on me.
Crewdson's father was a psychoanalyst and had his therapy sessions in the basement of the family house, which was a forbidden area for his three children. Crewdson remembers how he tried to listen with his ears glued on the floor to what was going on beneath his room. Fascinating how later as an artist he tries to go beneath the surface the same way.

French shepherd of Les Bas Landes (South-Western part of France) on stilts knitting in a field. Who knew? I enjoy sometimes sitting (or walking around) in public libraries and picking out random books that are not necessarily connected to my research.
