Beneath the Roses

"I feel very strongly that every artist has one central story to tell,
the struggle is to tell and re-tell that story over and over again in visual form
and try to challenge that story,
the act, the core of that story remains the same,
it’s like the defining story of who you are."

I've just finished watching the documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters [2012] and it made a profound impact on me. Crewdson's father was a psychoanalyst and had his therapy sessions in the basement of the family house, which was a forbidden area for his three children. Crewdson remembers how he tried to listen with his ears glued on the floor to what was going on beneath his room. Fascinating how later as an artist he tries to go beneath the surface the same way.
