Being a fashion designer I was trained to keep an inspiration book. It just got beyond control. Books and boxes full of photocopies, photographs, little objects, fabric samples, magazines, notes, drawings you name it. I thought why not order it this way... as sort of a blog.

The sense of hearing [No.1]
2014-01-08

“Both of my parents are deaf, unbelievably elegant and extremely demanding. I studied art history, then taught art history to deaf children for a long while. I was surrounded by silence and developed a love for art and reading early on, feeding my own imaginary world with fantasies and romance. It was all very magical and strange.”

Robert Rabensteiner photographed by Pierpaolo Ferrari in the original coat of Balthus.

Besides the obvious fact that I am in love with the picture, I was amazed by his upbringing, too. He talks about it in the interview he gave for Dapper Dan Magazine [Issue04]. Both of his parents were deaf and that made me remember of the Budapest born dancer and choreographer Pál Frenák. Frenák's parents were also severely hearing and speech impaired, making sign language his first means of expression. Sign language and mimicry influenced his entire body of work.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something in those two images that are both very now and very ancient at the same time. Puritan but lush, greatly disturbing.

Naplion by Emily Kroll on the left and Emily Kroll X Araks [Fall 2013 collaboration, fabrics from Araks' Fall 2013 collection] on the right.

The graphic quality of Emily Kroll's designs was the first that caught my eyes. Only later did I get to know that there is more to her story. Not only are leftover fabrics from ready-to-wear designer collections used for the fabrication, but also members of the Amish community in Pennsylvania handcraft these.

A dear friend recommended me to check out Koos van den Akker's work. Thanks to Vice Media Inc. there is a 12 minute film on Koos and we can see him in his atelier showing his fabric manipulation craft. Watch the full video here.

Black is a way to be, he [Yohji Yamamoto] used to say, arrogant, shy, and to say to people I am very quiet, leave me alone.

Irene Silvagni remembers her role as creative director of Yohji Yamamoto in the movie Mono No Aware, directed by Debra Scherer.

Just watched the movie Peaceful Warrior from 2006. Found the below quote a great message for the new year:

Socrates: Everyone wants to tell you what to do and what's good for you. They don't want you to find your own answers, they want you to believe theirs.

Dan Millman: Let me guess, and you want me to believe yours.

Socrates: No, I want you to stop gathering information from the outside and start gathering it from the inside.

Design: RAAAF | Atelier de Lyon
Client: Municipality Culemborg | DLG (The Dutch Service for Land and Water Management)
Location: Diefdijk 5 - Highway A2, The Netherlands
Status: completion 2010

I was so happy to see Bunker 599 on the cover of The Architectural Review. Their creators, RAAAF & Atelier de Lyon were awarded with the Architectural Review Award for Emerging Architecture 2013.

The concrete bunker, which has been erected in 1940 as part of Holland’s defences against military invasion, has been split in two in 2010. A long row of stairs leads through the sliced building along to the shore, connecting land, water and monument. Split infinity, as Jonathan Glancey from The Architectural Review titled it.
