Stigma
2014-03-07
© Adam Lach [Napo Images]
Photograph from the series Stigma by Adam Lach. Being originally from Wroclaw, Poland, just like the woman on the photograph, he started to question the stigmata attached to the local Roma community.
After just checking Adam Lach's website. I noticed that he received Award of Excellence for this particular image from Pictures of the Year International [POY]. Rightfully so, his image addresses such a significant Central European issue with rivaling artistry.

Awaiting spring
2014-03-04
"It turns out that Europe - at least pockets of it - has not lost its connection to nature’s rhythms. ... Men - and until recently, it has almost always been men - don costumes that hide their faces and conceal their true forms. Then they take to the streets, where their disguises allow them to cross the line between human and animal, real and spiritual, civilization and wilderness, death and rebirth." [Rachel Hartigan Shea]
Mechkari [bear handlers] in Prilep, in the region of Pelagonia, Macedonia.
Photograph by Charles Fréger from his book, Wilder Mann [Wilder Mann: The Image of the Savage. Kehrer. 2012].
During two winters and carnival seasons he photographed remains of ancient beliefs, in several European countries.

Hokus Fokus
2014-03-03
"I’m afraid of listening to Kaboom Karavan during the day, because I don’t want the light to seep into the music and ruin the mood. The setting must be grim, damp and arcane; the air a bit stuffy and moist, to better transmit the vibrations; the smells slightly dusty, as that of occult. I’m afraid of listening to Kaboom Karavan during the night, because I don’t want my arcane fantasies to materialize into the metaphysical voices that carry this song. I must leave the door just a little bit open, so that I can escape at the last moment, lest the dreams become real." Review by HC at HeadPhoneCommute

No pain, no gain
2014-02-27
I rarely see people as excited as my friend when she got these pair of shoes. She had to walk them in, which was painful, but she was handsomely recompensed with all the compliments she got for wearing them.

Revue de dessin

© Arjan van Helmond in The Drawer. Revue de dessin. Volume 5 - Les Choses
The Drawer is such an inspirational little magazine. Not a magazine, in fact, I don't quite know, if there is a genre that fits this special publication. I like the way the publishers describe it: UNE REVUE • DE DESSIN • MONOMANIAQUE • THEMATIQUE • ARTISANALE • TRANSVERSALE
Anytime you open it, and you will open it again and again, you see something different.

Transhumance
2014-02-27
The action or practice of moving livestock from one grazing ground to another in a seasonal cycle, typically to lowlands in winter and highlands in summer.
It origins from early 20th century French, from the verb transhumer, based on Latin trans [across] and humus [ground].
Just one more time about Winter Nomads, winner of European Film Academy Award 2012, in documentary category. Fascinating, intimate portrait of men living in nature, respecting it. Rare. Warm-hearted.

Time marks
2014-02-19
One of the more than 5,000 glass-plate negatives from the archives of Costică Acsinte. He was a Romanian army photographer during World War I, and following his discharge, worked as professional photographer until his passing in 1984.
Cezar Popescu volunteered to restore and digitize the archives in the hope that there is a greater value to these pictures: they document an era, they are of anthropological value.
Please have a look at the entire archive
